The original soundtrack has fitting music for every scenario, alongside some of the best leitmotifs from the first game altered to fit their new locations. The sound design is just as competent and brilliant as the art. I almost feel unqualified to go into further detail because of how much influence behind it must have gone right over my head. Every level is exploding with creativity and color and atmosphere. The character design preserves the highly overexaggerated stylization from the first game but manages to make the characters as appealing as they are grotesque. The art design here is just as showstopping as the story. Hence, they must have had enough money to make them a spectacle but not enough time to make them too unique. My theory is that they had little time and a high budget to create every boss fight, considering the bosses were cut mid development before Microsoft bought distribution rights for millions. They look spectacular and usually fit thematically but they all play out suspiciously similar, and a large creature standing over a platform is one of the most played out formulas for creating a boss fight in gaming history. Every boss fight in the game takes place on a large round platform, and almost all of them are giant monsters that loom over said platform and provide objects to fling back at them with telekinesis. However, considering all the creativity and variety in each level, something struck me as off. You never know quite what to expect until you dive right in and discover it for yourself. The level design is absolutely steeped in environmental storytelling as well as variety from world to world. Every new psychic power introduced for this title is usable, in both collectathon platforming and arena fights, which gives them all purpose alongside the select returning abilities. The combat is just as straightforward as the first game but with new enemies and powers that give you additional options and approaches.

For the sequel, they apparently decided to scrap the latter elements by removing the inventory screen and few item-based puzzles, and in return strengthened the core platforming and combat. Psychonauts is famous for being a genre-bending pioneer by virtue of merging a 3D Platformer with point-and-click game mechanics. The first game is practically surging with comedic genius from start to finish, but this game tends to be far dryer and cans the gags entirely at times for the sake of preserving drama.
